And She Told Me She Wasn’t a Writer…

brokenpencilandpaperSo after yesterday’s post about making money in ways that are not Squidoo focused a lensmaster wrote to me off-site and said something along the lines of, “But I’m not a writer, I can’t do those things.

To which I replied as follows…

You may not think of yourself as a writer or a content creator, but that’s only because you’ve been enjoying what you do. Squidoo is first and foremost a writing and sharing platform, even if you aren’t thinking of it in that way it still is what it is.

I looked at your lenses and you have plenty of words on your pages. Content that is beautiful, descriptive, and compelling. It’s not all sales copy and fluff, but coming to [a page] I can tell that these are your words and not some words strung together in the hopes of attracting a search visitor. Those words didn’t write themselves, did they?

Of course not. I worked really hard on that page.

That, my friend, makes you a writer in your own way. And you should be proud of what you’ve written, of what you’ve created. The good news is that content on the web, much like content on Squidoo, does not have to be all words. It’s a beautiful medley of words, images, references, and all sorts of good things. Go out there and have some fun with it.

It doesn’t have to be a Shakespearean sonnet to be beautiful, it doesn’t have to be perfect to be profitable (thank you Nicole Dean for that phrase that I love), and you don’t have to be a writer to write.

  1. This post speaks volumes to me. I never thought of myself as a writer when I started working online. I failed English in high school. I HATED writing. You know what though? I found out that I love helping people and it doesn’t take perfect grammar or flowery language to do that. It takes passion and the will to work hard and put yourself into what you’re doing.
